Research Experience for Undergraduates: Social and Economic Inequalities

For the past five years, FMHI has offered a Summer Research Institute in Behavioral Health. The program was funded by the National Science Foundation as part of its Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program. The NSF grant ended after our summer, 2009 session and a new proposal was submitted to NSF on October 22, 2009. The outcome of the proposal review process may not be known until April, 2010. If our proposal is successful, we would like to be prepared to admit students to the REU right away. Therefore, we will be accepting applications for the summer, 2010 program. Applicants need to be aware that (1) we will not be able to accept students if the NSF proposal is not funded and (2) we may not be able to act on student applications until April, 2010. We understand that this timeline may make it difficult for some students to consider our program for summer, 2010. However, we encourage you to check the website frequently as we will provide an update as soon as we hear from NSF.

If funded, the 2010 REU will focus on Social and Economic Inequalities. The REU will prepare students to conduct interdisciplinary research to better understand the social impact of inequality across several domains such as education, crime and incarceration, immigration, economic segregation, wellness, and political power, among others as well as potential mediators of inequality. The REU, to be offered jointly by the faculty of the College of Behavioral and Community Sciences and the Department of Sociology, will emphasize community-based participatory research approaches.

Additional information and application materials will be posted in November, 2009. In the interim, we encourage you to learn more about the accomplishments of our previous REU Scholars by reviewing the links below.

Our REU Scholars have successfully published their research and made presentations at local, regional and national conferences. We anticipate that participants of the REU in Social and Economic Inequalities will be just as successful in their research careers.
