" FMHI Computer Support Videoserver Used In National NIMH Study "
The Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Computer Support Center's videoserver is supporting a major National Institutes of Mental Health grant entitled "Personality Features in Social Deviance". Working with the grant's principal investigator, Dr. Norman Poythress of the Department of Mental Health Law and Policy, the CSC and FMHI's Media Center encoded 12 videotaped segments ranging from a half-hour to approximately two hours in length for the project.
The videos were transmitted in Microsoft's Streaming Media format at 30 frames/sec. and at a data rate of 250 kilobits/sec. producing very smooth video at the participating universities, most of which were connected to the de la Parte Institute via Internet2. Dr. Kevin Douglas, the project director, remarked, "It really was an excellent medium and format for training people across 5 states and 10 different sites." The FMHI videoserver has been in continuous operation for almost three years and has been featured at national events such as the annual Internet2 meeting in Washington, D.C. in March, 2000. At that meeting USF became the first university in Florida to demonstrate a high bandwidth application, developed at the de la Parte Institute.
