" Three New Post-doctoral Fellowships Offered at the de la Parte Institute"
The Department of Mental Health Law & Policy, Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute (FMHI), University of South Florida (USF) is now offering three post-doctoral research fellowships. The forensic psychology fellowship focuses on research in any subspecialty of forensic psychology, such as assessment or treatment of persons involved in court, forensic or correctional settings; operation of the correctional, forensic, or juvenile justice systems; mental health law. The fellowship in substance abuse and co-occurring disorders research will combine research in the area of addictions, substance abuse, and/or co-occurring disorders with a focus on public policy and services research. The fellowship in mental health policy and services research targets policy analysis and/or services research, including evaluation of treatment outcomes, impact of system-level policy initiatives such as managed care, and cost-effectiveness/cost-benefit analysis.
The focus on research for policy has two distinct features. First, it makes an intrinsic contribution to the work of an agency or a legislature, i.e. it contributes ideas or information that advance the policy decision making process. Second, well-defined research and its outcomes can be more easily incorporated into public sector services delivery.
Roger H. Peters, PhD, Professor and Associate Chair of the Department coordinates the fellowship programs for the Department. Dr. Peters also serves as Coordinator of the Institute's Collaborative on Substance Abuse Treatment and Policy Research and as the Principal Investigator and Director for several grant projects, including the SAMHSA-funded Suncoast Practice and Research Collaborative (SPARC) project.
The Institute supports a number of fellowship and internship programs, including a one-year APA accredited Predoctoral Psychology Internship Program in Public Sector Psychology and a two-year post-doctoral Public-Academic Fellows Program in Mental Health Services Research funded by the National Institute of Mental Health and administered by the National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors (NASMHPD) Research Institute. Institute interns and fellows produce publishable papers, conference presentations, policy analyses, or comparable work products appropriate for reading by legislators and policymakers.
