Mental Health Exceptionalism: Root Causes and Implications
A Perspective From Economics & Policy Research
On October 6th & 7th, the Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute
was pleased to host Dr. Thomas McGuire as part of the 3 I's Distinguished
Lecture Series of Insight, Innovation and Impact. This series allows the
de la Parte Institute to better understand its work from new and exciting
perspectives and to leverage these visits and interactions into new research,
training, partnership and teaching endeavors.
Dr. McGuire is a Professor at Harvard's Medical School/Department of Health Care Policy and member of the Institute of Medicine. For more than 25 years, Dr. McGuire has conducted academic and policy research on the economics of health, with a special focus on mental health. He has researched the design and impact of health care payment systems, the economics of health care disparities, and the economics of mental health policy. He has analyzed the reasons behind "discrimination" by doctors, and conducted empirical research to identify the contribution of the various mechanisms behind health care disparities. His current research includes application of theoretical and empirical methods from labor economics to the area of health care disparities.
Dr. McGuire is the 2008 recipient of the NIHCM Foundation's 14th Annual Health Care Research Award. He received the 1998 Arrow Award (joint with Albert Ma) from the International Health Economics Association. In 1991 he received the Carl Taube Award from the American Public Health Association. He was the 1981 recipient of the Elizur Wright Award from the American Association of Risk and Insurance for his book Financing Psychotherapy, and he has co-chaired four NIMH-sponsored conferences on the economics of mental health. Dr. McGuire is a member of the Institute of Medicine, and a coeditor of the Journal of Health Economics.
