Dr. Lisa Cooper to Deliver Inaugural FMHI Distinguished Lecture
On March 25th, Dr. Lisa Cooper will deliver a lecture entitled
"Race, Ethnicity, and Gender: Lessons for Culturally Appropriate Care Models for Depression".
Dr. Cooper is a Professor of Medicine and Public Health at Johns Hopkins University.
She is a nationally and internationally known researcher whose scholarship focuses on reducing
health disparities and improving medical outcomes for minorities in the United States.
The lecture is co-sponsored by the College of Public Health and will be held from 3:30 – 5:00 p.m.
in Auditorium 1023-B of the College of Public Health.
Recent Events
Dr. Arthur L. Whaley, Professor of Psychology at the University of Texas and Associate Director of Mental Health Services Research at the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health consulted with FMHI faculty on August 8, 2005. Dr. Whaley was interested in methods used by FMHI to integrate initiatives related to policy and research in the mental health services area.
Dr. King Davis, Professor of Social Work, University of Texas, and Executive Director of the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health, was the featured speaker at an FMHI Open Forum conducted on April 7, 2005. Dr. Davis’ research has focused on public mental health policy, the provision of culturally competent mental health services, health care for individuals with mental illness, and disparities in rates of illness and services for consumers of color. Dr. Davis also met with individual faculty members to discuss aspects related to health disparity in their ongoing research projects.
Dr. Lennie Poon, Professor of Psychology and Director of the Gerontology Center at the University of Georgia, consulted with faculty in Aging and Mental Health on March 31, 2005. Dr. Poon discussed areas related to adult cognition and issues pertaining to cross-cultural research. He also discussed curriculum development in aging and his highly successful mentorship conference with doctoral students in the School of Aging Studies.
Dr. Kyriakos Markides, Professor, Department of Preventive Medicine and Community Health, University of Texas Medical Branch, conducted a faculty seminar and provided consultation to FMHI faculty from February 25 – 28, 2005. Dr. Markides, an expert in epidemiological research with Mexican American elders, also consulted with faculty and students in areas related to epidemiology and the health of Mexican American elders.
