Graduate Studies in Behavioral Health
MSPH Program
The Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute and the College of Public Health (COPH) jointly offer behavioral health as part of the Master’s and Doctoral programs in the Department of Community & Family Health (CFH). Graduate Studies in Behavioral Health examines community and family issues in policy, evaluation, systems performance, and outcomes of alcohol, drug abuse, and mental health services. Students with public health, psychology, education, counseling, social work, and nursing backgrounds analyze current trends and research in behavioral health services.
The Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) Behavioral Health Focus is a thesis degree program that prepares students for careers in applied behavioral health research and outcomes evaluation. Requirements include completing a set of COPH core courses, coursework in behavioral health, courses in research methods, a comprehensive exam, and a thesis.
In addition to practical applications of public health, and developing research skills, graduates of the MSPH degree in Behavioral Health will:
- Critically evaluate the utility of a broad range of theories, which have relevance for research and practice in community and family health.
- Use concepts and methods from social and behavioral sciences in the design and implementation of community health research and intervention programs.
- Understand the relationships between psychological, interpersonal, social structural, cultural and biological factors as they impact on disease prevention and health promotion.
- Critically evaluate scholarly research in community and family health in terms of its theoretical soundness, scientific rigor, appropriate use of concepts and methods, and contribution to knowledge.
